Welcome to my blog! I hope to use this place to share with family and friends my progress in the crazy world that is Irish Dance…and perhaps throw in a bit of my other hobbies as well. Expect posts (and pictures!) after every feis, and my daily rumblings and mumblings about practicing, the Irish dance world in general, and probably everything else I feel even tangentially relevant =)

Oh, and expect the occasional girl-in-armor, sword-wielding, shield-smashing photos full of all that medieval fun stuff I do with EMAA (European Medieval Arts of Arms).

A bit on the Name:
Valkryja is an Old Norse word translating literally to “Chooser of Slain”, but in practice refers to the legendary women/goddesses who were said to serve Odin (the chief god of the pre-Christian Scandanavia) in his feasting hall and on the battlefield. They were said to be seen over the skies during battles, where they waited for the chosen fighter to be slain, so that they could escort him to Odin’s hall, Valhalla, where they lived until the final battle at the end of the world. Valkyrjar are the ultimate Norse example of “Powerful Women Warriors”.

To put it all together: Irish dancer + medieval martial arts + Viking beliefs ==> “Dancing Valkyrie”
